Is a repeal of the whaling ban getting closer to reality?

I’m having a hard time with this one. Could the International Whaling Commission really even consider lifting the ban on whaling? With the increase in awareness about the health of the Earth’s oceans and the plight of endangered species, it would be a tragedy for this to happen.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare is working to maintain the ban, but notes in a story posted Tuesday on Yahoo! News that the process could play out over the next three months. The IWC annual meeting is set for June in Agadir, Morocco.

If the IWC takes this step, the authority needs to taken away from it. Maybe its time for an organization such as the United Nations or some new international body to take over the effort to protect the world’s whales. And strong sanctions should be placed on any country that defines the ban.
