I’m not an advocate of training methods of Cesar Millan and I must admit I never watch Dr. Phil. But credit should be given to both TV celebrities for devoting shows to the issues of puppy mills and dog fighting.
In the episode “Inside Puppy Mills” Millan assists the group Last Chance for Animals in a puppy mill investigation and rescue.
Dr. Phil, on a recent show, interviewed a dog fighter who at one point states – “Dogfighters take care of their animals. They’re the best taken care of dogs in the world. In my opinion, I’ve never done anything to an animal that’s cruel.”
This is the same sort of statement used by those within the greyhound racing industry. It’s hard to imagine how someone can make a statement like this, one so utterly absurd that it defies reality. But I’ve seen dog fighters, puppy mill operators and greyhound racing insiders – with a straight face – suggest they are doing nothing wrong and talk about much they care for their dogs.
But the more I think about, absurd is the only route they have in defending the indefensible.
On the plus side, every time animal cruelty is exposed in the media, at least a few more people stand to get an education about these issues.
