BP and Coast Guard come to ‘agreement’ with environmental groups on risk to turtles

BP and US Coast Guard officials who are heading up the effort to burn oil on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico have reportedly reached an agreement on processes that might cut the risk of turtles being burned to death.

It remains to be seen if the parties involved in the burning operation will use more caution and in fact actually rescue turtles swirled into the muck as oil is skimmed into compact areas to burn.

The Miami Herald reports – “Cathy Liss, president of the Animal Welfare Institute, said she was pleased — but also prepared to return to court if BP and the Coast Guard don’t follow through with developing a formal plan.”
