A federal judge on Thursday overturned a decision by the US Fish and Wildlife Service that stripped the gray wolf of protections under the Endangered Species Act.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Defenders of Wildlife.

“This decision is a significant victory for wolves, for the integrity of the Endangered Species Act, and for all Americans who care deeply about conservation,” said Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife. “The court’s ruling makes it clear that decisions under the Endangered Species Act should be based on science, not politics.”

Defenders of Wildlife reports 350 wolves were killed last year in Idaho and Montana, after the species was delisted.
