October 4 is World Animal Day

October is a huge month for animal welfare, including World Animal Day on October 4.

World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

It is intended as a day of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals. It is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology.

The month also features local blessing of the animals services around this first two weekends of the month, around the birthday of Saint Francis of Assisi. And Walk for Farm Animal events are held in October, as noted in a previous Pack Mentality post.

And the first full month of fall is a time to promote the adoption of homeless dogs, as reported in two posts below.

Our house of rescues love this time of year, when the weather turns cooler for walks around the neighborhood and on the beach.
