New breeder regulations proposed in Guilford County, NC

I found a story from the High Point Enterprise posted on the American Chronicle website concerning new regulations being proposed on dog breeding in Guilford County, NC.

According to the story, the new rules might include annual inspections and fees. This would be important in weeding out the puppy-mill operators.

The original proposal included an exemption for “AKC registered and inspected breeders.” Fortunately, that exemption was dropped. The rules would include annual inspections for breeding operations that sell at least 50 puppies per year. The ceiling should be lower, but at least these breeders will be inspected.

And the story included another example of a slippery slope argument – to the extreme – again.  A breeder says, “The animal rights people want to get rid of all breeder animals.” It’s merely a disparate attempt to come up with any argument against humane and reasonable legislation. When no one can come up with a reasonable argument, this is what you get.

‘ Oh my gosh. If we require dogs to be vaccinated against rabies and to wear the tags, soon people will be required to wear vaccination collars and tags. OH Noooooo! And if you don’t wear your tag, the Human Control Offices will arrest you and put in people shelters and force you to eat dog food.

I absolutely agree that the ceiling should be lower. I believe that anyone that owns unaltered dogs that are allowed to breed and have more than one litter a year, whether those litters came about by choice or by accident, should be considered breeders.

Yes, as far as mandatory inspections and other regulations, when you get right down to it, it should not be limited to just breeders selling more than 50 puppies per year.
