Work underway to strengthen Susie’s Law in North Carolina

At the same time a handful of elected officials in Missouri are trying to overturn a law that protects animals, officials in North Carolina are looking at strengthening Susie’s Law – which offers stronger punishment for those convicted of animal cruelty.

(Note – I’m an NC native and I know we’ve got a long way to go here in the area of animal welfare. But this is a topic where the state is moving forward.)

Susie’s Law was enacted early last year and went into effect in December. The move now is to give animal control officials the ability to press charges in cases of animal cruelty.

The proposals also include charges for inadequate shelter, requirements for psychological care and preventing those convicted from having pets.
