Video of the Day – “Gorilla Walks Like a Man”

These two amazing videos show Ambam – a gorilla at the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park – walking upright. Apparently, this isn’t a first for gorillas but it is unusual at best.

He seems – on observation – to be really proud of his new-found ability.

Gorillas in zoos pay attention to the humans who come to see them, and some even try to provoke the humans into a reaction by throwing things at them (including gorilla poo), just as some humans will knock on the glass of an enclosure with an animal behind it. This leads me to wonder whether the gorilla possibly learned this gate in imitation of visitors or zoo staff.

Animals do learn by observation. I’ve seen cat turn a doorknob, for example, having watched how humans open a door.
