Mississippi Senate passes bills to increase penalties for torturing cats and dogs

The Mississippi Senate passed two bills Wednesday to increase penalties – apparently to the felony level – for torturing cats and dogs.

The state is one of four in the U.S. that does not currently have felony animal cruelty laws.

But the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation is opposing the legislative move. The Clarion Ledger reports the organization’s former leader has said “”radicals were pushing animal cruelty bills in hopes of turning people into vegetarians and curtailing livestock production. “”

So this guy believes people who torture animals should be protected under the law because of some wacky notion that there is a conspiracy to turn everyone into vegetarians.

Oh, noooo – aliens will swoop down from the sky and force people will change their diets. They’ll eat plants!!
