Last Tuesday in February is Spay Day

The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association join forces every year to promote the last Tuesday of February as Spay Day.

This February 22 is the 17th Spay Day, as more than 700 events in 50 states are planned.

Education is extremely important in this area. Too many people still refuse to spay or neuter their pets because they have been misinformed about the health and overall benefits of doing so. Others are not able to afford the procedures for their pets and this is where programs to aid those families are helping.

We can all help by spreading the word and educating those who don’t yet get it.

But much more needs to be done. People allowing their dogs and cats to breed randomly and puppy and kitten mills are major players in the level of homelessness in the US (along with entities such as greyhound racing and backyard breeders).
