Life-saving dog in the running for national award

A Portland, Ore. dog is a top-10 finalist for the Dogs of Valor award sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

Ceili is a 15-year-old lab-mix who hounded (no pun … okay pun intended) one of her guardians for much of one August day. As reported by The Oregonian, Ceili followed Danny Fincher from room to room, licked his arms and legs and sniffed his breath.


Budget-cutting proposals in NC include elimination of Animal Welfare Division

The North Carolina Chapter of the Humane Society of the United States is reporting that the North Carolina Department of Agriculture has submitted a budget proposal that includes cutting the state’s Animal Welfare Division.

Groups hope African Lions can be protected under the US Endangered Species Act

A coalition of wildlife organizations are pushing for protections from the US Endangered Species Act for the dwindling population of African Lions. The groups include some members of the Hall of Fame of animal welfare and protection  РInternational Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Humane Society International (HSI), Born Free USA, Born Free Foundation and Defenders of Wildlife.

PR Newswire is reporting the population of these great animals has declined by nearly half over the last two decades, as a result of “retaliatory killings, loss of habitat, over-exploitation by recreational trophy hunters and commercial trade, disease, and other human-caused and natural factors.”

Last Tuesday in February is Spay Day

The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association join forces every year to promote the last Tuesday of February as Spay Day.

This February 22 is the 17th Spay Day, as more than 700 events in 50 states are planned.

Education is extremely important in this area. Too many people still refuse to spay or neuter their pets because they have been misinformed about the health and overall benefits of doing so. Others are not able to afford the procedures for their pets and this is where programs to aid those families are helping.

Smithfield Foods offers response to HSUS video

Smithfield Foods has produced a statement in response to the release of a hidden-camera video from the Humane Society of the US, showing the horrible treatment sows face in gestation stalls.

The Humane Society of the United States released this video – from inside a facility run by a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods – on December 15. It documents the horrible and extremely inhumane conditions female pigs endure in gestation crates.
